An illustration for prints. The fiction writer Ernest Hemingway (of The Old Man And The Sea fame) had this New Orleans style house built in Key West, FL during an era when Havana, Cuba was the jewel of the Caribbean. A frequent visitor of Havana, he participated in several fishing competitions for blue marlin for which he held many records. He was also a runner of rum across the ninety miles of ocean between Havana and Key West providing fodder for speculations by the native conchs. His favorite hangout was Sloppy Joe’s where he relaxed from his writing. Hemingway’s book The Old Man And The Sea was inspired by one of his fishing trips to the Bahamas with a friend. While trolling for fish, it is not uncommon to find that when you reel the fish in you are left with only half a fish because a barracuda has beaten you to it. That experience inspired the story of the book.
