This watercolor was painted from a photograph I took in May of 1983. It was done as a 33rd birthday gift for my youngest son who was born in May in Key West when the Poinciana trees bloom. They make great orange-red umbrellas throughout the streets of the island. The leaves wait to come out until the blossoms begin to wane and then sidewalks become petal clad in their flames. If you go to the top of the La Concha Hotel on Duval Street, the best aerial view of the island except for the lighthouse, you can see all the trees that dot the island with their glorious red.
