I took a photo from behind this man while walking in a very small village in south China in 1987. It was the end of his workday, having transplanted all the rice seedlings that his baskets carried as he moved from rice paddy to paddy. Seedlings were removed from a single paddy where seeds had once been planted. Irrigation is accomplished through a simple system of narrow ditches with lips that carry the water from paddy to paddy. Plowing is done by water buffalo harnessed to a wooden plow held by a barefoot farmer.
