I painted this while studying art history as a post-graduate student of Florida State University. Prior to executing this painting I made a soft pastel sketch on blue-gray pastel paper as an impressionistic study. The canvas was painted with blue-gray acrylic with a retarding medium to prevent the base coat from drying before the subject matter could be worked into it loosely. This technique produced a visual effect rather than a precise representation. Mood was created with moonlight and it appears as if the wind is howling through the tree branches. The architecture of the grave markers makes a strong subject matter to resist the wind revealing tension and a story.
